The re-release even comes with a new featurette from the “Labyrinth Experience & Masked Ball,” a massive cosplay event in the UK that looks exactly as gloriously chaotic as the movie deserves.
The wildest part is that Labyrinth, which now sits comfortably in our cult classic pantheon, was originally a box office disappointment. Jim Henson’s Creature Shop built an entire puppet army, Brian Froud designed some of the most imaginative fantasy creatures ever put on screen, Henson directed what would become his final film, and the world at the time just said, “Eh.” Which honestly tells you everything you need to know about humans.
But like all the best weird little movies, it came back stronger. It grew. It got a second life, a fandom, endless behind the scenes stories (including the cursed tale of the Hoggle animatronic doll that spent literal decades lost in an airport suitcase), and a legacy that only gets richer with age.
And now it’s coming back to the big screen, just to remind us how magical it was... and how many years have passed since we first fell in love with it.
I miss Bowie.
